David Moyes resigns as Sunderland manager after their relegation to Championship

Sunderland have announced that David Moyes has decided to walk away from his role in the dugout with immediate effect.

The 54-year-old said: “I would like to thank Ellis Short and the Board for giving me the opportunity to manage Sunderland and the fans for always being so passionately supportive of their club.

“I wish the players and my successor well in their efforts towards promotion back to the Premier League.”

During Moyes’s time in the North-East, Sunderland never placed higher than 16th place in the standings, with the club sitting in the relegation zone since September.

The Scot leaves with a record of eight wins and 28 defeats from his 43 games in charge.

Newcastle United captain Jamaal Lascelles to undergo groin operation

Jamaal Lascelles has captained Newcastle to an immediate return to the Premier League this season, securing automatic promotion from the Championship at the first time of asking.

The centre-back missed Friday night’s victory at Cardiff City through injury, though, and the club have now confirmed that he will undergo an operation that will rule him out of Sunday’s match at home to Barnsley.

“Newcastle United can confirm that Jamaal Lascelles is set to undergo a groin operation on Tuesday evening that will see him ruled out of Sunday’s season-closer at home to Barnsley,” read a statement on the club’s official website.

“The defender, who has captained United to Premier League promotion this term, missed Friday night’s victory away to Cardiff City in preparation for his operation and is now due to return for pre-season training at the start of July.”

Newcastle will win the Championship title if they better Brighton & Hove Albion’s result on Sunday.

Manchester United striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic undergoes successful knee surgery

Ibrahimovic suffered ligament damage in his knee during last month’s Europa League win over Anderlecht – an injury serious enough to raise questions over whether it could bring a premature end to his career.

The 35-year-old’s agent Mino Raiola revealed that he has now had surgery on the problem, and Ibrahimovic himself took to Instagram to confirm that he is on the mend.

“Fixed, done and stronger,” he posted. “Once again thank you for the support.

“We will enjoy my game together soon.”

Ibrahimovic could face up to a year on the sidelines, plunging his United future into doubt with his current deal due to expire at the end of the season.

Manager Arsene Wenger said: “Cazorla has a special problem

Manager Arsene Wenger said: “Cazorla has a special problem and at the moment they only thing I can say is I haven’t seen him in training or even in fitness work. It is possible he can play again this season but at the moment it is very difficult to predict.
“When a player starts training again it takes six weeks for them to be competing for a place in the team. It is very frustrating for us because at the start of the season he was the star of the team, it is a big loss for us but especially sad for him.”
Aaron Ramsey, who has been out with a calf injury since the end of January, is back in full training. Laurent Koscielny, Danny Welbeck, Olivier Giroud and Mezut Ozil are all likely to be fit for Saturday, but Mohamed Elneny faces three weeks out with an ankle injury.
